Frequently asked questions
Learn more about our earrings, where thoughtful design meets meticulous craftsmanship.
When did women start wearing earrings?
Women have worn earrings for thousands of years, with some of the earliest examples dating back to ancient Sumeria around 2500 BCE. In civilisations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, earrings were often used to display wealth and status, made from precious metals and detailed designs. Over time, their styles have changed to suit different fashions and traditions.
Diamond earrings started gaining popularity in the late 19th century, thanks to advancements in diamond cutting that enhanced their sparkle and appeal.
Why do women wear earrings?
Women wear earrings to express their personal style and complement their outfits. Whether simple studs, hoops, or statement pieces, earrings serve as a versatile accessory for various occasions and reflect individual taste. They also hold cultural and sentimental value, often given as gifts to mark special milestones or achievements.
In bridal jewellery, earrings are a key element, adding elegance and completing the wedding look. For many, they remain a timeless accessory that blends beauty with individuality.
What are the different types of earrings?
There are several types of earrings, each offering a unique style. Solitaire earrings feature a single stone, often a diamond, creating a classic and elegant look. Cluster or halo earrings group smaller stones around a central gemstone, creating a dazzling effect. Coloured stone earrings incorporate precious gems like sapphires, rubies, or emeralds, adding vibrant colour and personality to the design.
At Rennie & Co, we specialise in earrings that feature high-quality diamonds and gemstones such as sapphires and rubies, ensuring each piece is both beautiful and timeless.
What are the most flattering earrings?
The most flattering and popular earrings are often diamond solitaire studs, although this depends on personal taste. Set in platinum or 18ct gold, they offer a clean, classic look. Their simplicity makes them highly versatile, perfect for any occasion, from everyday wear to special events.
What are statement earrings?
Statement earrings are bold, eye-catching pieces designed to make an impact. Often larger or more intricate than everyday earrings, they feature unique designs or striking details. Many statement earrings are bespoke and made to order, tailored to the wearer’s personal taste for a truly one-of-a-kind piece. These earrings are typically chosen for special occasions or to complement a fashionable outfit, allowing the wearer to express their individuality.
Do you offer both natural and lab grown (synthetic) diamond earrings?
We work exclusively with natural diamonds and have chosen not to offer lab-grown options. While we respect that the choice between natural and lab-grown stones is personal, we feel the narrative around lab-grown diamonds isn’t always fully transparent. We source our diamonds through the Kimberley Process and the System of Warranties, promoting conflict-free origins. In addition, many of our suppliers are accredited members of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), ensuring high standards of quality and responsible practices.
