The differences can be remarkably small. A variation of fractions of a millimetre can affect the proportions of a diamond and, consequently, its overall appearance.

Symmetry and polish are also important. Precise facet alignment allows a diamond to perform as intended, while a poorly finished stone may lack the crispness of a more carefully cut example.

This is why two diamonds with identical carat weights and similar grades can command very different prices. The numbers tell only part of the story.

The diamond is only one part of the ring.
