A Hatton Garden jeweller’s advice on caring for platinum wedding rings
30/05/2018A jeweller’s advice on caring for platinum wedding rings
We all want to take the best possible care of our jewellery pieces so that they look at their best. This is particularly true of the special and sentimental platinum wedding rings that many couples wear. Here are a few tips from an experienced Hatton Garden jeweller on how to keep your platinum wedding bands in great condition.
• Platinum is a beautiful precious metal used to craft wedding rings. It offers an incredibly lustrous finish and possesses a lovely weight. However platinum as a metal is often misunderstood. Whilst it is difficult to push a platinum wedding ring out of shape, it is still prone to scratching.
• Remove your platinum wedding bands for the more spirited activities in life. If you are an enthusiastic gym goer and your training involves gripping or weight lifting, it is important to remove your wedding ring. Other activities such as gardening and DIY will also leave your ring with signs of wear if not removed. Many customers feel understandably uneasy about leaving their platinum wedding rings in a gym locker – it has become increasingly popular to thread the ring onto a short inexpensive heavy chain which can then be worn around the neck during exercise.
• Make use of our ultrasonic cleaner. An ultrasonic cleaner uses high frequency sound waves to clean jewellery in a liquid solution, and is particularly effective with diamond set jewellery. Advice should always be sought on what should/shouldn’t be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner.
• Polishing your wedding band will significantly lift its appearance. Polishing the metal will remove the scratches from your platinum wedding bands and its mirror finish will be restored. During each polish, a very thin layer of metal is removed and so we generally recommend to limit this to no more than every 3-5 years. Your Hatton Garden jeweller might suggest polishing your engagement ring just before your wedding day so that both rings possess the same brightness.
• Visit your chosen Hatton Garden jeweller every 6 months for a check-up and a clean of your jewellery. Platinum wedding rings with diamonds should have their settings checked regularly.
